in our solar system it is originally measured in Au, because light years is way to big but outside of our solar system it is measured in light years because the universe is HUGE and km is too small but it is usually measured in between planets or the diameter of a moon or planet. the distance between earth and neptune is about 29 au and the distance between the sun and neptune is about 30.1 au.
